WorldStage– In a renewed drive to strengthen road safety and enhance insurance compliance across the country, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) have agreed to deepen collaboration under the newly signed Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025.
The partnership was sealed when the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, paid a working visit to the Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, at the NAICOM headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, the Corps Marshal congratulated NAICOM on the successful enactment of the NIIRA 2025, commending the Commission’s reform efforts in repositioning Nigeria’s insurance industry. He emphasized the need for real-time data exchange between FRSC and NAICOM to improve emergency response to road accidents and ensure swift compensation for victims.
Mohammed also called for the digitization of verification processes to eliminate fake motor insurance certificates and strengthen public confidence in the compulsory third-party motor insurance scheme.
Responding, the Commissioner for Insurance expressed appreciation for the FRSC’s visit and reaffirmed NAICOM’s commitment to inter-agency cooperation. He noted that the NIIRA 2025 provides stronger legal backing for compulsory motor insurance and establishes a compensation fund for road crash victims, which will be jointly managed by a multi-agency committee that includes FRSC representation.
A representative of the NHIA, Mr. Ajodi Nuhu Nasir, lauded the synergy among the three institutions, describing it as a milestone that would ensure “prompt medical attention and financial protection for accident victims, while reducing fatalities on Nigerian roads.”
At the end of the meeting, the agencies agreed on key action points to drive their collaboration:
“ Data Sharing Integration: NAICOM and FRSC will harmonize their data systems for seamless verification and emergency coordination; Joint Public Awareness Campaign: The agencies will launch a nationwide campaign to educate motorists on the benefits of genuine insurance and road safety compliance.
“Enforcement Committee: A joint committee will be inaugurated soon to tackle fake insurance policies and strengthen enforcement of mandatory coverage and Insurance Requirement in FRSC Operations: The FRSC will intensify checks on valid third-party motor insurance during licensing and road safety operations.
The alliance, according to both agencies, represents a new phase of collaboration that will enhance road safety, guarantee timely medical response, and protect motorists’ interests nationwide. The date for the formal inauguration of the joint committee will be announced in the coming days.
