WorldStage Newsonline– The House of Representatives has called on companies operating oil facilities in coastal area of Southern Ijaw to end persistent oil leakages from their facilities.
This followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Rodney Ambaiowei (PDP-Bayelsa) during plenary in Abuja on Tuesday.
Presenting the motion, Ambaiowei, who represent Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency, said that the volume of oil leakages from the facilities was enormous, saying it could lead to water pollution in the area.
He said that the slow response of the companies to oil spillage could lead to unrest in the area.
The House adopted the motion and mandated its Committee on Petroleum (Upstream) to synergize with relevant government Ministries, Departments and Agencies to carry out investigation on the issue and to report back for further legislative action.
