WorldStage– President Bola Tinubu has appointed Mr Rilwan Babalola as Special Adviser on Power and Chairman of the newly constituted Presidential Taskforce on Power Sector Reset and Restoration.
This is contained in a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday in Abuja.
The president also redesignated the Office of the Special Adviser (Energy) as Special Adviser (Oil and Gas) to streamline roles within the energy governance framework.
Babalola, a former Minister of Power, brings extensive sectoral expertise and experience in addressing structural challenges in the electricity value chain.
The Presidency said the appointment underscores the president’s resolve to drive a results-oriented reset of the power sector.
It said the Presidential Taskforce would operate under a direct mandate to restore efficiency, discipline and commercial viability across the sector.
The taskforce will also coordinate activities among relevant ministries, departments and agencies.
Its mandate includes driving a comprehensive system reset of the electricity sector and implementing a “performance before expansion” framework.
It is also expected to reduce technical, commercial and collection losses, while strengthening cost discipline and tariff integrity.
The taskforce will enhance revenue assurance, improve sector liquidity and restore grid discipline and market integrity.
It will also promote productive use of power, develop Electricity Growth Zones and reduce fiscal exposure.
The Presidency added that the taskforce would deliver a 90-day implementation blueprint.
Tinubu charged Babalola to bring urgency, discipline and strong execution to the assignment.
He said the goal is to deliver measurable improvements in power supply and overall sector performance.
