WorldStage— The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has commenced the establishment of state-of-the-art innovation hubs across 45 beneficiary tertiary institutions.
Establishment of the hubs was officially disclosed in Abuja by Arc. Babatunde Olajide, TETFund’s Director of Monitoring and Evaluation.
Olajide represented the Executive Secretary of the Fund, Arc. Sonny Echono, during the graduation ceremony for Cohort 34 of the Research for Impact (R4i) Initiative, a rigorous two-week capacity-building workshop organized in collaboration with the Innov8 Technology Hub.
According to Olajide, the 45 new innovation hubs will serve as a sustainable environment for researchers trained under the R4i program to continuously apply their skills, sustain collaborative ventures, and scale up their concepts into viable commercial businesses.
Spread strategically across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, the massive rollout aims at bridging the long-standing gap between academic findings and practical industrial application.
The initiative is designed to transform Nigeria’s higher education institutions from mere certification centers into dynamic research and development (R&D) hubs.
By equipping these institutions with modern infrastructure, TETFund aims to assist local academics in refining their ideas, building functional prototypes, and accelerating the commercialization of home-grown technologies.
The newly funded centers are engineered to provide multidisciplinary workstations tailored to regional and institutional economic needs.
According to Olajide, dedicated funding has already been earmarked for specific institutions, such as ₦1 billion each for the Federal University Dutse, University of Uyo, and University of Ibadan, alongside ₦750 million each for several regional polytechnics and colleges of education.
He also disclosed that the core laboratories inside the innovation centers will feature cutting-edge facilities, including Robotics, coding, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) centers; 3D printing, laser technology, and product design laboratories; Renewable energy and biotechnology labs; and Creative workshops, leathercraft hubs, and recycling platforms
Speaking on the long-term impacts, TETFund emphasized that creating these ecosystems will bolster national security and economic self-reliance through local industrialization.
By bringing academics, technology experts, and local market structures together, the initiative will encourage the birth of university-linked startups capable of creating jobs and driving sustainable wealth across Nigeria.
