Sixty-six years after lowering the Union Jack, Nigeria remains a nation of brilliant potential, yet a widening gap between macroeconomic milestones and everyday survival continues to constrain it. This hard-hitting op-ed argues that true independence requires more than political sovereignty—it demands that citizens insist on systemic accountability and recognise that national transformation begins with personal responsibility.
On October 1, 1960, the Union Jack lowered, and Nigeria’s green-and-white banner rose over a sovereign state. Sixty-six years later, that flag still flies, but the anniversary demands a more searching audit than mere survival: did the promise beneath the flag endure?
Every October 1, we return to familiar words: unity, resilience, patriotism, hope, and sacrifice. We remember those who fought for independence. We honour those who imagined Nigerians determining Nigeria’s future. We celebrate the fact that our destiny no longer formally rests in the hands of a colonial power.
All of that matters. But at 66, perhaps Nigeria is old enough for a more difficult conversation. Independence was never supposed to mean merely replacing those who governed us. It was supposed to change what the government meant to us. It was supposed to give Nigerians ownership of their country. And so, 66 years later, the question is no longer: Are we independent? The harder question is: what have we done with independence?
Navigating a land of brilliant potential and harsh realities
Nigeria remains one of the most extraordinary collections of human potential anywhere on earth. Our musicians fill arenas far beyond Africa. Our writers sit on bookshelves worldwide. Our doctors, lawyers, engineers, academics, and entrepreneurs distinguish themselves wherever they go. Our technology founders have built companies from daunting conditions—conditions that would have discouraged less determined people.
Our young people repeatedly demonstrate what happens when Nigerian talent meets opportunities. Yet there is another Nigeria–a Nigeria where families calculate how much food they can afford before entering the market. A university graduate may spend years searching for gainful employment and never find it. At the same time, a woman in labour may still discover that the nearest health facility lacks what she needs, where children who should be sitting in classrooms are found in mines, on streets, or in dangerous manual labour. Where communities still fear kidnappers. Where too many young professionals look at the country that educated them and conclude that their best chance of flourishing lies abroad.
In September, Nigerians again confronted record-high petrol prices as international oil shocks pushed pump prices to around ₦1,400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja. Food inflation stood at 19.57 per cent in August, even as headline inflation had eased to 15.39 per cent, Reuters. And only days ago, residents of communities in Niger State protested over hundreds of people they said remain in captivity more than a month after armed men attacked their communities, Reuters. This too is Nigeria at 66. We should neither deny it nor allow it to become the entirety of the Nigerian story.
Translating national milestones into everyday survival
Perhaps our greatest mistake has been measuring national progress too far away from ordinary people. GDP grows. Government revenue increases. Foreign reserves rise. New roads are commissioned. Budgets become larger. These things matter. But somewhere between the government spreadsheet and the family kitchen, national progress must eventually become personal. Can people eat? Can children learn in a safe environment? Can workers live on what they earn? Can entrepreneurs keep the lights on without generating their own electricity? Can a farmer reach the farm without fearing kidnapping?
Can a pregnant woman expect competent healthcare regardless of her income? Can a citizen encounter the police without fear? Can a young Nigerian work hard and reasonably believe that effort, rather than connection, offers a path forward to progress? These are also measures of independence. A country becomes truly independent when citizenship carries practical dignity. Political sovereignty without human dignity is an unfinished achievement.
Looking past Abuja to recognise our own complicity
This is where our Independence Day conversation must become uncomfortable for citizens too. It is easy to speak about Nigeria as though it were somewhere in Abuja. “The government should fix Nigeria.” Often, the government should.
The government bears enormous constitutional responsibility. Those who seek public office ask citizens to entrust them with power, resources, and institutions. They must therefore be held to a higher standard. But Nigeria is larger than its government.
Nigeria is also us. We cannot demand honest leaders while celebrating dishonesty when it benefits us. We cannot complain about corruption while offering money to bypass a queue. We cannot condemn electoral malpractice and then sell our votes. We cannot complain about dirty streets while throwing rubbish from moving cars. We cannot demand functioning institutions while asking friends inside those institutions to bend the rules for us.
We cannot complain about tribalism in government while practising it in our homes, workplaces, and communities. We cannot demand accountability only when the politician involved belongs to the other side.
Perhaps one of Nigeria’s deepest problems is that we sometimes condemn nationally what we excuse personally. A country is not transformed merely when its leaders change. It changes when its citizens’ standards change too.
Embracing critical love over comfortable silence
We must avoid another mistake. Patriotism does not require pretending that everything is fine. Nigeria does not need citizens who clap while the house deteriorates. It needs citizens willing to repair it. To criticise Nigeria is not necessarily to hate Nigeria. Sometimes criticism expresses investment.
You complain because you believe something better remains possible. The danger is when disappointment becomes indifference. When “Naija na Naija” becomes our explanation for everything. When dysfunction stops shocking us, corruption becomes normal, preventable deaths become statistics, another kidnapping becomes another headline, and moving on becomes instinctive. When another scandal arrives, we shrug because we have seen worse things before.
A nation begins to lose itself when its people lose the capacity to be offended by what should never have become normal. We must guard that capacity.
Stepping consciously into another high-stakes election season
This Independence Day carries particular significance because Nigeria has entered another election season. Campaigning for the January 2027 elections is underway. Economic hardship and insecurity are already central issues in the political contest. Soon the colours will become brighter. The slogans will become louder. Politicians will rediscover markets and spiritual centres. Motorcades will multiply. Promises will return.
And Nigerians will once again be invited to decide who should exercise power in their name.
But democracy requires more from citizens than voting. Ask questions. Read manifestos. Interrogate records. Reject political violence. Refuse ethnic and religious manipulation. Demand debates. Defend the right of people you disagree with to speak. Do not become a thug for somebody whose children are safely abroad. Do not surrender four years of citizenship for one afternoon’s inducement.
And after the election, remain a citizen. Democracy does not end when the ballot box closes.
Realising that the change we seek begins within
I still believe in Nigeria. Not sentimentally. Not because our problems are small. And certainly not because our history gives us reason to assume that everything will somehow work itself out. I believe because countries are ultimately human constructions.
What human beings have damaged, human beings can repair. What poor leadership has weakened, better leadership can strengthen. What indifference has normalised, courage can challenge. What one generation failed to finish, another generation can continue, beyond criticising. But hope without responsibility is merely wishing.
So this October 1, I do not want to wish Nigeria a happy Independence Day. But before I ask anything more of Nigerians, I want to acknowledge something we too easily overlook: millions of Nigerians are already trying.
Every morning, people—adults and children alike—wake up and confront circumstances that demand more resilience than should reasonably be required of anyone. Parents stretch shrinking incomes to feed their children and keep them in school. Workers travel long distances to jobs whose wages struggle to keep pace with the cost of living. Small business owners generate their own electricity, provide their own water, navigate difficult roads, pay taxes and levies, and somehow still open their doors the next morning. Young people study, work, create, apply, fail, begin again, and continue searching for opportunities. Families support relatives through unemployment, illness, and hardship. Nigerians carry enormous burdens, often while privately performing many of the functions a functioning state should make easier.
So when I ask something of you today, I do not ask because you have done nothing. I ask precisely because so many of you have already done so much.
I ask that, despite the exhaustion, we refuse to surrender our agency.
Wherever you encounter Nigeria, improve it. Not because the government should be relieved of its responsibilities. It must never be. But because this country belongs to us too, and even while we demand better from those entrusted with power, we must continue building the Nigeria we demand from them. If you teach, teach the child well. If you employ people, pay them fairly. If you lead, lead honestly. If you serve in government, remember whose money you are spending. If you are a journalist, protect the truth. If you are a lawyer, defend justice.
If you are a religious leader, build consciences rather than political machineries. If you run a business, refuse corruption, even when it seems easier. If you are a parent, raise children who understand that integrity is valuable when nobody is watching.
When you vote, vote thoughtfully. If you disagree politically, refuse hate. If you see injustice, do not train yourself to look away. If you have succeeded, create an opportunity for someone else. And if you have influence, use some of it for someone who has none.
None of these actions alone will transform Nigeria. Millions of them might.
Recognising that sovereignty is an active daily practice.
Our founding generation fought to inherit a country. Our responsibility is to make that inheritance worth passing on. The Nigeria we desire will not arrive one morning from Abuja.
It will be built in classrooms, courtrooms, newsrooms, markets, hospitals, offices, places of worship, polling units, and homes. Public officials who understand that power is temporary will build it. Citizens will build it, knowing responsibility is permanent. Perhaps that is what national independence should mean at 66. Not that the work was completed in 1960. But in 1960, the work became ours. The flag became ours. The failures became ours. The possibilities became ours. And the future became ours.
So when you see the green and white this October 1, celebrate. But after the celebration, choose something to build. Choose something to protect. Choose something to improve. Choose one corner of Nigeria within your reach and refuse to leave it exactly as you found it.
Because Nigeria will not become the country we desire merely because we desire it.
Someone must build it. Someone must defend it. Someone must insist upon it.
And 66 years after independence, perhaps it is time we stopped waiting for that someone.
That someone is us.
