WorldStage— A joint security task force consisting of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian military, and the Nigeria Police Force has arrested five suspected members of a notorious criminal gang linked to the mass abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.
The high-profile arrest, confirmed by intelligence sources marks a significant breakthrough following the brazen attack that took place in Imo State on Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day.
The prospective corps members were originally intercepted on October 1, 2026, while traveling in branded buses along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway.
The graduates, who had set off from Ibadan, Oyo State, were en route to their designated NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when gunmen ambushed them at approximately 6:30 AM.
Following the abduction, the Inspector General of Police deployed a Deputy Inspector General to move the case to national headquarters in Abuja, leading to the eventual rescue of the 20 corps members before the arrests of the perpetrators.
The arrest reportedly followed a tense seven-day ordeal—during which the kidnappers demanded an initial ransom of N1 billion before scaling it down—a coordinated rescue operation successfully freed all 20 victims in Amakoha Ubi village, Imo State.
Building on actionable intelligence gathered during the rescue and subsequent investigations, security operatives launched a series of targeted crackdowns between October 10 and 14, 2026.
The operations spanned multiple hideouts across neighboring states, specifically targeting areas within Port Harcourt in Rivers State, and the Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State.
According to senior security sources, the raids led to the direct apprehension of five key suspects believed to belong to the syndicates terrorizing the region’s major transit routes.
However, sources revealed the operations were met with armed resistance, disclosing that three of the suspected members of the gang managed to evade capture during a fierce gun duel with the joint forces
The fleeing suspects reportedly escaped with varying degrees of gunshot injuries, prompting security agencies to activate a massive regional manhunt to track them down.
The five arrested suspects are currently in custody and are undergoing rigorous interrogation.
Authorities state that the criminal network is heavily linked to a broader string of armed robberies, violent carjackings, and targeted highway kidnappings across the South-East and Niger Delta axes.
Meanwhile, the rescued NYSC members, who had previously been admitted to a DSS medical facility in Owerri for post-trauma evaluation, have been reunited with their families as the state tightens security on critical inter-state borders.
