WorldStage— The National Peace Committee (NPC) has issued a stern warning to Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other political actors against using inflammatory rhetoric, misinformation, and inciting campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The caution was contained in a joint statement released on by the NPC Chairman and former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd.), alongside the committee’s convener, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah.
The intervention comes as political activities and public campaigns ramp up across the country following the independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) established timeline.
The prominent peace panel expressed deep concern over the early escalation of political tension.
According to the statement, the NPC has already recorded over 60 election-related incidents within the span of just one month.
These documented cases include acts of political violence, intimidation, targeted threats, attacks on political gatherings, and the rapid spread of digital misinformation.
“We urge political parties, candidates, and their supporters to immediately stop the spread of false or inflammatory information and prevent acts capable of disrupting the electoral process,” the committee stated, stressing that the stability of the nation depends heavily on the decorum of its leaders.
The NPC’s warning aligns with recent statements from regulatory bodies and civil society groups demanding a shift away from identity-based politics.
The committee reminded major political stakeholders that a credible election cannot be achieved through force, coercion, or the weaponization of fake news.
With key political figures like Atiku and Obi repositioning themselves for the presidential race under new alignments, the NPC emphasized that political actors must strictly adhere to the commitments outlined under the National Peace Accord.
The panel urged top politicians to steer their followers toward issue-based discourse, focusing on socio-economic development and policies rather than character assassination.
As the 2027 election cycle gathers momentum, the NPC also underscored the importance of early intervention by law enforcement.
The panel called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to proactively investigate credible threats of violence before they escalate into full-blown crises.
The committee also reiterated that state apparatuses and electoral umpires must maintain institutional neutrality to foster public confidence in the democratic process, warning that unchecked hostility at this early stage could severely undermine the peace of the nation.
