The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, has advanced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda with the launch of two joint postgraduate programmes by the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, and the University of Lagos (UNILAG), bringing world-class international education closer to Nigerian students.

The landmark partnership represents a significant step in the Federal Government’s drive to improve education quality, strengthen the global competitiveness of Nigerian universities and equip young people with skills for emerging opportunities in the digital economy.

The programmes, an MSc in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Technologies and an MA in Digital Media and Communications, will commence in September 2027.

Plans, according to the Minister, are also underway to expand the collaboration into undergraduate degree programmes in market-relevant disciplines.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Alausa described the initiative as a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s education sector, demonstrating the country’s growing capacity to attract international academic partnerships and deliver world-class learning opportunities at home.

He linked the development to President Tinubu’s philosophy of daring to pursue ambitious ideas that create lasting economic value, noting that the administration’s reform agenda is positioning Nigeria to become a destination for quality education and global talent.

“Today is a great day for Nigeria. We now have a country where we are daring to do big things. Today, we have transnational education in action, with one of the world’s leading universities partnering with one of Nigeria’s best universities to bring international-standard education to our country. This is a first for Nigeria and the beginning of many more to come,” the Minister said.

Dr Alausa explained that the collaboration aligns with the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), particularly its Education Quality Assurance pillar, and the Federal Government’s Transnational Education (TNE) Policy.

He said the initiative would expand access to internationally developed programmes, strengthen local institutional capacity and enable more Nigerian students to obtain quality postgraduate education without travelling abroad.

The Minister further noted that the programmes were deliberately selected to address emerging skills requirements, particularly in technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and digital communication.

He expressed confidence that the partnership would help produce graduates capable of creating businesses, generating employment and contributing meaningfully to national development.

The MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Data Technologies will provide training in areas including machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, large language models, data management and AI ethics.

The MA in Digital Media and Communications will equip students with expertise in digital cultures, research methods, content creation, broadcasting and contemporary media practices, supporting career opportunities in journalism and the wider communications industry.

Professor Nick Vaughan-Williams, Provost of the University of Birmingham, said the institution was proud to launch the programmes with UNILAG, noting that the collaboration would support Nigeria’s higher education and talent-development needs.

He emphasised that universities have a vital role in preparing graduates for rapidly changing global economies through skills development, entrepreneurship and expanded employment opportunities.

Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, described the partnership as a major step towards internationalising Nigerian higher education through mutual respect, shared responsibility and the co-creation of knowledge.

She said it would strengthen experiential learning, modernise curricula, improve global visibility and support research in emerging fields, including artificial intelligence and digital communications.

Jonny Baxter, British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, said the joint programmes demonstrated the strength of UK–Nigeria educational cooperation and a shared commitment to preparing young people for a rapidly changing economy.

He noted that developing expertise in artificial intelligence, data science and digital communications would promote innovation, expand opportunities and support sustainable economic growth.

Donna McGowan, Country Director of the British Council Nigeria, welcomed the initiative, describing transnational education as an important platform for knowledge exchange and skills development.

She said the partnership would make high-quality UK education more accessible to Nigerian students while helping build the talent needed to drive national growth and prosperity.

The launch follows the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Birmingham and UNILAG on January 29, 2026.

The programmes were developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) through a Transnational Education Unit based in Lagos.

The partnership reinforces the Federal Government’s determination to build a tertiary education system that responds to labour-market demands, strengthens institutional quality and positions Nigerian universities for greater international recognition.

Dr Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment, under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and through NESRI, to expanding strategic international education partnerships, strengthening quality assurance and delivering globally competitive learning opportunities within Nigeria.

He emphasised that the ultimate goal is to empower Nigerian students with relevant skills, nurture entrepreneurs and job creators, and build a stronger education system that drives innovation, economic growth and sustainable national development.
