The statistics bureau said on Friday that Kenya’s overall inflation rate fell to 5 per cent in August, down from 6.27 per cent in July, due to lower foodstuff prices.
Zachary Mwangi, director general of Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, said the consumer price indices (CPI) dropped 0.90 per cent, from 203.61 in July to 201.78 in August.
“In August 2019, the food and non-alcohol drink’s index decreased by 1.89 per cent following a decline of 1.04 per cent that was recorded in July 2019.’’
According to the bureau, lower food cost was attributed mainly to favourable weather conditions.
Mwangi said the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels’ index fell by 0.10 per cent as a result of lower prices of some cooking fuels.
The transport index decreased by 0.03 per cent, on account of a reduction in the pump prices of diesel and petrol, the statistics body said.
The prices data was obtained from selected retail outlets in 25 data collection zones in Nairobi and 13 other urban centres.
