WorldStage NewsOnline—- In a bid to enhance learning in the country, Chief Ayo Opadokun, an activist and a leader of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) has urged the federal government to increase the budgetary provision to the education sector.
Opadokun who disclosed this on Sunday while delivering a lecture on library and reading culture at the Molete Baptist Church in Ibadan called on government at all levels to devote more funds to the establishment of viable libraries in order boost reading culture.
“Government needs to fund education as well as provide a new syllabus as the current one does not conform with the advancement in technology.
“Teachers must be well remunerated to attract the best brains into the teaching profession.
“Government also needs to build more public schools to encourage parents to enroll their children,’’ Opadokun said.
According to him, the advancement in technology has had a negative impact on reading culture among Nigerians, especially the youths.
“Some people think they can get better education through the internet but there can be no substitution for reading materials and the advantages in reading are enormous,’’ he said.
Opadokun said youths do not have the time to read any longer and rather prefer to surf the internet while some have become scammers.
“There is no encouragement to read in Nigeria because illiterates are now millionaires through fraudulent means and they are being celebrated.
“Some of them crack into personal information of innocent people to steal their money.
“Reading makes one to be more knowledgeable, enlightened and be able to transmit the knowledge from one generation to the other,’’ he said.
