WorldStage– Ernest Ndukwe, the former Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) boss serving as MTN Nigeria’s board chairman, offered to continue serving eight years after he joined the board.
The 77-year-old sought reappointment and got it during the company’s last annual general meeting, according to a statement company secretary Uta Ukpana signed and issued May 4.
Ndukwe joined the board in 2018, eight years after he left NCC as pioneer executive vice chairman and CEO between 2000 and 2010.
While he headed the commission, Ndukwe warned the telecom giant on different occasions to comply with the per-second billing and interconnectivity.
He came short of imposing a fine on MTN, though.
Ndukwe’s appointment as MTN board chairman came about the same time as other board members like Omobola Johnson, a former communication minister, and Omoigui Okauru, also a former tax regulator.
Before Ndukwe, MTN Nigeria’s board had Paschal Dozie as chairman, and he led the board for 18 years as pioneer chairman, retiring the year the company got listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
