WorldStage– A coalition of political parties and youth groups held a peaceful protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Sokoto State on Wednesday, 22 April 2026.
The demonstrators demanded the immediate resignation of the INEC National Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN).
The demonstration, organized by a coalition of parties including the ADC and LP, called for Professor Amupitan’s resignation, citing perceived bias and the removal of the David Mark-led ADC leadership from the INEC portal as reasons for their actions and demanding intervention from the Federal Government.
Recent concerns also focus on the Chairman’s neutrality ahead of the 2027 elections.
The demonstration in Sokoto was orderly and remained peaceful under the supervision of security personnel.
The protest letter was received by a senior INEC official in the state, who assured that it would be forwarded to the national headquarters.
The commission has previously dismissed these calls, stating their actions comply with a Court of Appeal ruling and constitutional requirements.
The protest in Sokoto is part of a broader, coordinated campaign dubbed “#AmupitanMustGo” or “Operation Occupy INEC,” which has seen similar protests in Lagos, Abuja, and other northern states
Protesters highlighted concerns regarding the credibility of the commission ahead of future electoral processes.
The INEC Head of General Administration and Procurement in Sokoto, Hussaini Tanko Yahaya, assured the coalition that their grievances would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for action.
In separate developments, other groups have staged counter-protests supporting Amupitan, accusing critics of trying to blackmail him, while INEC has previously denied allegations of partisanship.
