WorldStage– Nigeria has joined other African nations in adopting the Africa Water Vision 2063 at the 14th Ordinary Session of the Governing Council of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), held in Monday in Dakar, Senegal.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Utsev, led Nigeria’s delegation to the high-level meeting, which brought together African Ministers responsible for water and sanitation.
According to a statemt, the session marked a historic milestone with the adoption of the Africa Water Vision 2063, its Policy Framework, and the official launch of implementation.
Aligned with the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Vision aims to guarantee water security, safe sanitation, and resilient ecosystems across the continent.
In its communiqué, the AMCOW Governing Council reaffirmed commitment to Domesticate and implement the Africa Water Vision 2063 at national and regional levels; Strengthen financial sustainability by increasing statutory contributions from Member States; Develop the AMCOW Business Plan (2026–2030), Triennial Work Programme and Budget (2026–2028), and Strategic Programme on Groundwater for Water Security and Resilience in Africa (SPGWR 2026–2033) and to Convene an International Conference on Financing the Africa Water Vision 2063 in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) in 2026.
The Council further directed the AMCOW Secretariat, working with the AU Commission and development partners, to submit the adopted Vision to the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2026 for endorsement as Africa’s common position ahead of the UN 2026 Water Conference.
Speaking at the session, Prof. Utsev praised AMCOW’s leadership and reaffirmed Nigeria’s strong support for the Vision. He stressed that its full implementation would accelerate progress on SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), enhance climate resilience, improve public health, and spur economic growth across Africa.
“The Africa Water Vision 2063 is a bold and transformative framework that reflects our continent’s aspirations for water security, safe sanitation, and sustainable development. Nigeria stands ready to work with fellow Member States to translate this vision into concrete actions for the benefit of our people,” the Minister said.
Nigeria’s participation reflects the Federal Government’s broader efforts under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to advance integrated water resources management, climate-smart sanitation systems, and regional cooperation for sustainable development.
Prof. Utsev was accompanied by senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, alongside African Ministers, AU officials, development partners, and key stakeholders.
