WorldStage– The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched a fully electronic registration platform for Capital Market Operators (CMOs), marking a significant step in its drive to digitize regulatory processes, improve operational efficiency and strengthen oversight of Nigeria’s capital market.
The Commission said the new e-Registration platform, deployed through its ePortal, enables designated regulatory services to be completed entirely online, eliminating manual processing and streamlining engagements between the regulator and market operators.
According to a statement issued by the Commission on Wednesday, the platform covers the electronic submission of applications, regulatory review, approvals and communication of decisions for services included in the current phase of implementation.
SEC said the initiative is expected to reduce administrative bottlenecks, shorten processing timelines and provide applicants with greater visibility into the status of their applications, while enhancing the quality and speed of regulatory service delivery.
“The new platform represents a major step towards creating a seamless digital regulatory ecosystem that enhances operational efficiency while strengthening regulatory effectiveness,” the Commission stated.
The regulator noted that the migration to a fully digital registration process would strengthen regulatory oversight through standardized workflows, electronic documentation, secure digital record management and enhanced audit trails.
It added that the platform aligns with its strategic objective of leveraging technology to improve market efficiency, enhance the ease of doing business and deliver faster, more transparent services to stakeholders.
SEC also said the digital platform would improve the integrity of regulatory processes by reducing delays associated with paper-based documentation, while providing a stronger foundation for regulatory analytics and future innovations to support effective market supervision.
The Commission explained that implementation would be phased to ensure a smooth transition without disrupting market operations.
It clarified that the current phase applies only to post-registration services for existing Capital Market Operators, while electronic processing of applications from new entrants into the Nigerian capital market will commence at a later date.
The Commission urged all Capital Market Operators to familiarize themselves with the new platform and comply with the implementation timelines to ensure a seamless transition.
According to the SEC, the initiative forms part of its broader modernization agenda aimed at strengthening market infrastructure, improving transparency, boosting investor confidence and enhancing the resilience and global competitiveness of Nigeria’s capital market.
