WorldStage Newsonline– The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for complying with the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries and for submitting their 2024 Compliance Reports.
According to the report, a total of 13,597,057 accounts were shut down or deactivated across platforms in Nigeria for violating the code of practice.
The Code, jointly issued by NITDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), provides guidelines for promoting online safety, addressing harmful content, and protecting users in the digital space.
According to NITDA, the Key highlights from the 2024 compliance report include, 754,629 registered complaints from users; 58,909,112 harmful content takedowns; 420,439 cases of content removed and later reuploaded after user appeals, while 13,597,057 closed and deactivated accounts.
NITDA said the submission of these reports represented a significant step toward fostering a safer and more responsible digital environment for Nigerian users, while also showing platforms’ commitment to transparency and user protection.
The agency also stressed that the Code of Practice ensured that large service platforms operating in Nigeria comply with local laws, including tax obligations, while prioritizing user safety.
While acknowledging the progress made, NITDA emphasized the need for continuous collaboration among regulators, industry players, and civil society to strengthen user safety measures, boost digital literacy, and promote trust across Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
“Building a safer digital space requires sustained engagement from all stakeholders. NITDA remains committed to working with partners to enhance transparency and ensure a secure online environment for all Nigerians,” the agency said.
