WorldStage— The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has withdrawn recognition of all its diaspora chapters ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing a binding court judgment.
The announcement was made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director Esq.
The decision significantly impacts international support groups mobilizing for the party’s high-profile presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
In an official statement via X, the NDC explained that the move respects an FCT High Court ruling in Maitama by Justice Peter Kekemeke in Prof. Ali Alao v. APC & Anor (Suit No: CV/187/2025), which restricted Nigerian parties from operating abroad.
The court declared foreign political structures illegal and unconstitutional, and pledging commitment to due process, the NDC said it withdrew all prior recognitions of foreign chapters.
While thanking the international diaspora for their immense support and contributions toward Peter Obi’s presidential ambitions, the party urged supporters to channel their engagement through legal alternative pathways.
The NDC, in addition, stated it’s harmonizing splinter groups abroad under a unified framework and reviewing the judgment for further legal guidance as it pursues its mission for a new Nigeria.
