WorldStage– Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the electricity supply will improve, specifically noting that a turnaround is already underway.
The President gave the assurance at the APC National Convention on Friday, March 27, 2026 while acknowledging the widespread complaints regarding recent blackouts and stated that the government is “paying attention” to the situation.
He announced that the newly established Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) will inject approximately 1,500 megawatts into a new grid corridor to stabilize the national system.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had previously issued an apology for recent outages and expected a significant rebound in supply within the next 14 days as gas supply issues are resolved.
Tinubu has directed the National Security Adviser and military to provide aerial cover and security for engineers repairing damaged transmission lines, specifically the Shiroro-Kaduna lines, to prevent sabotage from halting restoration efforts.
While acknowledging that a full 24-hour supply may not be met within the initial four-year target, the administration remains confident in achieving constant power by the end of the President’s first tenure in 2027.
The Electricity Act Amendment 2025 was signed into law in February 2026, empowering all 36 state governments to generate and distribute their own electricity, thereby decentralizing the national grid. The current challenges are largely attributed to a gas supply crisis and mounting debts of approximately ₦3.3 trillion owed to gas suppliers, which have recently pushed power output below 4,000 megawatts.
