WorldStage– The family of Abdulsamad Jamiu, a 24-year-old member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), a mandatory one-year program for Nigerian graduates under 30, has publicly rejected the Nigerian Army’s explanation for his death on April 25, 2026.
Jamiu was fatally shot in the early hours of Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, Abuja
While the military maintains he was a victim of “crossfire” during a robbery response in Dei-Dei, Abuja, the family alleges he was deliberately shot inside his room.
The Guards Brigade Quick Response Force stated that troops on night patrol responded to a distress call at Shagari Estate, claiming fleeing robbers opened fire and Jamiu was fatally caught in the resulting exchange.
But the family asserts that soldiers entered the estate around 2:00 AM and shot Jamiu while he was in his room.
They argue that physical evidence, specifically a bullet hole through his door, proves he was not killed in an open confrontation or crossfire.
The Commander of the Guards Brigade has extended condolences to the family and the NYSC, while the Nigerian Army has confirmed that a thorough investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances.
The family is demanding a transparent, independent probe and justice for the deceased, who had recently secured a job and was awaiting his first salary.
