WorldStage– The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has urged Corps Members serving as teachers to actively contribute to improving the quality of education in their host communities.
He made the call during his visit to the 2025 Batch ‘C’ Corps Members deployed to Kebbi State at the Temporary Orientation Camp in Basaura, Jega Local Government Area.
Brigadier General Nafiu encouraged the Corps Members to assess the academic performance of their assigned schools and set clear targets for improvement.
“Check how well the school has performed in Mathematics, English, and the sciences. If you discover that the pass rate in English has consistently been about 30%, challenge yourself to raise it to 60 or even 70%. That should be your pride,” he said.
He also charged the Corps Members to build friendships across ethnic and regional lines, describing such bonds as essential to the nation’s unity and long-term success.
The DG advised them to fully embrace the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, noting that the service year should empower them with both the Certificate of National Service and a marketable skill.
He further encouraged the Corps Members to explore trade and business opportunities across different regions, adding that many successful entrepreneurs began their journeys during their NYSC year.
Nafiu revealed that the Scheme is partnering with the Bank of Industry, NNPC, Kudimata, Wema Bank, Access Bank and other institutions to provide grants and loans that support Corps Members in actualizing their business ideas.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Bala Dabo, informed the DG that despite its temporary status, the Kebbi Orientation Camp had been adequately equipped for smooth operations. He added that a total of 567 Corps Members were registered for the Orientation Course.
