WorldStage– The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had claimed that at least 163 worshippers were abducted by suspected terrorists in Kurmin Wali, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
However, the Kaduna State Police quickly dismissed the reports on Monday, challenging anyone to provide names or particulars of the alleged victims.
Rev. Joseph John Hayab, Chairman of Northern CAN, told journalists that the worshippers were reportedly abducted during Sunday services at Cherubim and Seraphim Church 1 and Church 2 in Kurmin Wali.
According to him, the CAN chairman in the affected area had informed him that attackers entered the churches while services were ongoing, locked the gates, and forcibly led congregants into the bush.
“Some escaped,” Hayab said, noting that eight worshippers managed to flee, but 163 were reportedly still in captivity as of Monday.
He commended security forces for their efforts and urged them to ensure the safe release of those affected.
The incident, if confirmed, highlights persistent security challenges in parts of Southern Kaduna, where communities have continued to face attacks despite ongoing military and security operations.
Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Muhammad Rabiu, described the reports of mass abduction in Kajuru as false, calling them fabrications by “conflict entrepreneurs” seeking to disrupt peace.
He urged anyone making such claims to provide the names and details of the supposed victims, warning that those spreading rumors would face legal consequences.
Mr. Dauda Madaki, Chairman of Kajuru Local Government, said security agencies promptly visited Kurmin Wali but found no evidence of an attack.
Both the village head, Mai Dan Zaria, and the local youth leader, Bernard Bona, confirmed that no abductions took place.
“I have asked for a list of the kidnapped persons, but so far, no one has come forward with a single name,” Madaki said, suggesting that the rumor may have been fuelled by individuals unhappy with relative peace in the area.
He urged residents to remain calm and report suspicious activities or rumor mongers to security agencies.
Similarly, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Sule Shuaibu (SAN), stated that investigations, including consultations with CAN and other religious leaders, indicated that the reports were unfounded
