WorldStage– The Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed grave concern about the kind of information being shared across the country, especially on social media.
She expressed the worry on her X (formerly Twitter) account handle, saying too many fake stories are being created and circulated, most of them focused on insecurity, and a lot of these false reports are deliberately designed to tarnish the image of this current government.
“Lately, I have grown deeply concerned about the kind of information being shared across the country, especially on social media. Too many fake stories are being created and circulated, most of them focused on insecurity, and a lot of these false reports are deliberately designed to tarnish the image of this current government,” she stated.
According to her, some individuals and groups intentionally twist events, edit videos, or completely invent stories just to create fear, confusion, and unrest. “Their aim is to make Nigerians lose trust in the government and to paint the country as if it is in constant chaos,” she alleged.
Sadly, the First Lady said, many people unknowingly help them by forwarding these messages without checking if they are true.
“This is why I am appealing to everyone to be more careful. Before sharing any news, voice note, or video, please take a moment to verify it. Confirm from credible sources, follow official updates, and avoid spreading anything that has not been confirmed,” she urged.
She admonished that “fake news harms all of us. It destabilizes communities, causes unnecessary panic, and damages the peace and unity we are working hard to build.”
She appealed to Nigerians to “Let us rise above those who want to mislead us. Let us share only what is true and protect the image of our country by refusing to spread lies. Nigeria is ours, and it is our duty to safeguard it.”
