WorldStage– The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has said that the Green Chamber would work in close partnership with the Executive to establish a coordinated and transparent system for tracking, assessing, and restoring abandoned Federal Government properties across the country.
The Speaker stated this while inaugurating the House Ad-hoc Committee to investigate and track all Federal Government’s abandoned landed properties in Nigeria.
Speaker Abbas, represented by the Chief Whip, Hon. Usman Bello Kumo, said the House was determined to ensure that every landed asset belonging to the Federal Government is identified, protected, and put to proper use.
Abbas highlighted that the properties are part of the nation’s resources and require careful management to prevent loss and misuse, noting that the House has placed the responsibility on the committee, chaired by Hon. Daniel Amos, “because we believe the work will strengthen public trust in how national assets are managed.”
He stated that both the Legislature and the Executive arms would maintain open channels of cooperation to ensure updated asset records, strengthen oversight, improve utilisation, and protection of public resources.
He reminded members of the ad hoc committee that “the 10th House of Representatives stands for integrity and transparency, and we are committed to the pursuit of fairness in the handling of these abandoned government properties across the country.
“Your assignment includes a full review of abandoned government landed properties and buildings. You are to determine their locations, conditions, and the circumstances that led to their abandonment.
“You are also expected to identify gaps in policy and propose practical measures for recovery, rehabilitation, or responsible disposal. These terms of reference provide a clear path for your investigation and should guide all aspects of your work.”
He further charged the ad hoc committee to “be thorough and balanced” in its investigation, saying “Every conclusion must rely on established facts and relevant law. The public expects honest findings and recommendations that will help the government stop waste and improve asset management.
“Engagement with ministries, departments, agencies, host communities, and other affected groups will be essential. Close attention should be given to information shared by these stakeholders. Your approach should remain fair and firm at all times.
“The House expects a report that offers workable solutions and strengthens the long-term protection of public assets.”
